Ontario House, aka Stone Jug
About This Spot
Stepping into Ontario House, affectionately known as the Stone Jug, feels like slipping into a well-loved chapter of Youngstown’s local story. This bar carries a quiet intimacy born from its long history and wooden interiors that echo with the presence of generations before. With its vintage tavern ambiance, you’ll find a cozy, unhurried pace where neighbors converge to chat, laugh, and share moments over familiar drinks.
The atmosphere here gently hums with a blend of old-school charm and genuine local warmth. It’s a space that invites you to linger, whether you’re perched along the beautiful back bar polished by time or settled into one of the nooks made for long conversations. The building itself, dating back nearly two centuries, adds a layer of depth to every visit—its well-preserved character making it more than just a bar, but a quiet gathering place for the community.
When it comes to what’s on offer, Ontario House serves up a thoughtful mix of classic American bar fare and comforting drinks that suit its easygoing vibe. Imagine savoring crispy wings, or indulging in a hearty Reuben while enjoying a cold Niagara Falls Neighborhood Ale or a smooth pour of Roe & Co Irish Whiskey. The menu isn’t about pushing boundaries—it’s about familiar flavors done well, providing a delicious pairing for the unpretentious setting.
Come evening, the energy subtly shifts with live music making Wednesday and weekends special. Local musicians take the stage, creating a soundtrack that complements conversations rather than overpowering them. Whether you’re here for a casual beer, a quiet catch-up, or to experience a slice of Youngstown's enduring spirit, the Stone Jug presents a place where people and stories intersect naturally.
For those who value character, connection, and a sturdy sense of place, Ontario House offers a quietly rich experience—a spot where time slows down just enough to feel grounded and welcomed.

Sort of a dive bar in downtown Youngstown. The drinks were inexpensive. The food was pricier than expected. Our waitress was nice and friendly. The food was good. Sefinitw dive bar atmosphere with a lot of older locals. We went back for live music on Saturday. The music was so-so (a big ding for the lead singer). There was a $5 cover. The beers were cheap which made up for the door charge.

The Stone Jug is an institution in Youngstown. It has a vintage tavern feel. The woodwork on the back bar is beautiful. It was built in 1842 by Alexander Lane on the site of an earlier tavern that was destroyed by the British during the War of 1812. We've been numerous times, usually to sit at the bar and chat with other locals. We've eaten lunch often and everything was great.

Husband and I are visiting from Florida. Just decided to stop in. Glad we did! Our barmaid, Lindsay was great! Good Bloody Mary and cold beer. We Did not have anything to eat. The owner was nice also. The old building is amazing! So beautiful. Didn’t go out back but it looked really cool. Would definitely stop in again.

My boyfriend and I are from Buffalo, NY. If you want to eat American and local food, you won't regret stopping for a bite here! Danielle our server was chill and friendly. She even allowed us to roam around the lower level of the building before we ordered food. As we were eating deliciousness, we're guessing the cook asked us how the food was, we said the truth: it's awesome! Next time in town, we're dining here again!!

Wednesday nights are a big favor here, as live music is available. Entertainment features mostly local musicians, but I promise you you might be surprised at the high caliber of musicianship. Wings, french fries and some other familiar items that are on the menu. I'm not a drinker but I know that alcohol is available. Weather permitting, the music is outdoors with wide open space as well as covered seating and picnic table open air seating. If you hear somebody tickling the keyboard, go tell David that John said that he rocks it out hard. Surroundings right around are idyllic. Yacht club and green space are only steps away. Go visit an institution called TheJug. Travel safe

Great bar with a large outdoor space with games, plenty of outside seating, outside bar, and a large stage for bands. They allowed our dog outside and were very friendly. Pretty cool old bar!

Stopped in for lunch and a beer on a hot summer day. LOVE the old building! Nice views of “downtown” Youngstown, NY and the Niagara River from the front porch. I had a grilled chicken sandwich. Prices are very fair (cheap by most standards). This place has been around a LONG time. You visit for nostalgia, nearby friends and a beer—not a culinary experience. Bartender was friendly. Patrons were mostly retirees. There’s a big wooden pavilion out back, and they host bands and musicians many nights a week during the summer. It’s classic WNY. :-) I had two hours to grab lunch before I left town, and made the quick commute from Grand Island down to Youngstown just to grab lunch on a nice summer day.
